[WH,BK]▓▓▓▓▓ KEEP THE READER'S INTEREST ▓▓▓▓▓[LG,LG]
[LR,LG]████████████████████████████████████████████[LG,LG]
The reader [BK,YW] begins [BK,LG] to read because you
have done something to [WH,BK] grab attention. [LG,LG]
Without attention, nothing you do, say or
write matters to anyone but you.
After you first grab attention, then you
[WH,BK] arouse curiosity. [BK,LG] As long as readers
remain curious about what's coming next
they [BK,YW] continue [BK,LG] reading.
You keep their curiosity alive with two
factors:
[BK,WH] ┌───────────────────────────┐ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ 1. What you write │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ 2. Page design │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] └───────────────────────────┘ [LG,LG]
What you write and the way you write it is
of utmost importance. You can, and should,
deal with that in more appropriate forums.
Your page (book) design must perform two
functions.
[BK,WH] ┌──────────────────────────────────┐ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ 1. Grab attention │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ 2. Logically direct the eye │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ along the desired route, │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ from one design element │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ to the next. │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] └──────────────────────────────────┘ [LG,LG]
Consequently, at this moment, you're reading
short paragraphs composed of relatively short
lines surrounded by lots of space.
You find it more inviting and comfortable to
read in this design than if it were a page of
solid text.

[WH,BK]▓▓▓▓▓ YOUR GRAPHIC ELEMENTS ▓▓▓▓▓[LG,LG]
[LR,LG]███████████████████████████████████████████[LG,LG]
Graphic elements have visual "weight," and
are positioned on the page to add interest,
achieve balance, or both.
Weight depends on three factors:
1. Size
2. Density
3. Color
[WH,BK] EXAMPLES: [LG,LG]
A small picture is "lighter" than a
larger picture.
A cartoon is lighter than a photograph
the same size because it has more "air"
(unused space) in it.
Black is heavier than white; red is
heavier than pink; a cross-hatched
block is lighter than a solid block.
You can achieve balance on a page (or
screen) in many ways. The easiest -- and
least interesting -- is a symmetrical
design. That means you simply position
comparable elements on each side of an
imaginary line that runs down the middle
of the page.
The most interesting, and usually the most
effective design is based on the see-saw
principle. You can balance a "heavy"
element close to the center line with a
"lighter" element farther away. Like this:
[LR] ▄▄▄▄▄▄
[LR] ██████ ▄▄▄▄
[LR] ██████ ████

Time-Warner, Ballentine, Disney and other
heavy hitters in this game hire high-powered
consultants to design the appearance of their
products.
You're your own product designer. If you
haven't been exposed to the principles of
visual design, you'll want to learn some-
thing about it.
Browse your public library's electronic
catalog for

In searching for these possibilities you'll
find others that may lead to still more.
[BK,WH] ┌────────────────┐ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] │ WARNING │ [LG,LG]
[BK,WH] └────────────────┘ [LG,LG]
Base your book design on [WH,BK] principles, [LG,LG]
not personal taste in clothing or home
decor.
Frequently a man says "I don't know
anything about that stuff. I'll get my
wife to do it. She has good taste."
And, indeed, she may have wonderful taste
in home decor. But you don't want a book
that harmonizes with the living room.
[WH,BK] ┌────────────────────────────────┐ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ You want a book that │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ does three things: │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ 1. Grabs attention │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ 2. Arouses curiosity │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ 3. Nourishes hope of │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] │ benefit │ [LG,LG]
[WH,BK] └────────────────────────────────┘ [LG,LG]
That job is accomplished in a different way.
Learn something about the principles before
you make design decisions.
Go, go, go!
